Softball diamond ready to rock
Flaxmere’s very own softball diamond is ready to go with an opening tournament being planned.
Modelled on Diamond 9 at Akin Park in Hastings and
sited on Ron Giorgi II Park, the backboard is up and the lines are marked.
Flaxmere Planning Committee board member and project co-ordinator Donnett Dellow said Hastings District Council last year agreed that it was the ideal spot for a grass diamond and funded the necessary elements. It will be used for training and social games, with competitions still playing at the district’s main softball facility at Akina Park.
“It is fantastic; we’re really happy with it,” says Donnett. “It is a local facility where our teams can practice between competitions and whānau and friends can use it at weekends for fun games.”
Plans for the official opening day are being worked through, with initial ideas looking at inviting schools to take part in a mini-tournament in June. Schools will be contacted directly; keep an eye on your Flaxmere Planning Committee’s Facebook page: MyFlaxmere for more details.
