New playground coming up

By the time Matariki arrives in early June our youngsters will be climbing the highest rope climb in the district.

Work on an expansion of the playground in Flaxmere Park started in March. Council has confirmed that the project will be completed by the end of May, weather permitting. And there will be lots for the kids, big and small, to explore.

At 7.2 metres the rope climb will be a challenge; and then there is the ‘mega-swing’, which can be swung out to 90 degrees, a new sand play area with a ride-on digger under the smaller rope climb, and a climb, scale and slide tower. The latter was able to be added following substantial donations from First Light Community Trust and Trust House Community Enterprise. At the same time the cycle ways and walkways through the park are being upgraded.

The existing firm favourites, including the splash pad, swings and ride-ons, will all still be there.

The expansion of the playground, at near $400,000, is part of the $1.2 million upgrade of the park that has been undertaken over the last 10 years.
