Language weeks 2024 - we're celebrating!

There are 11 languages on the national 2024 Pacific Language Week lists, starting with Rotuma (back in May - story here: https://www.flaxmere.community/single-post/from-rotuma-to-solomon-islands-celebrating-language) to the Solomon Islands in November.

Samoan Independence Day falls within Samoan Language Week (May 26 to Jun2) and this year was celebrated in Hastings in the Council chambers. Flaxmere and wider Hastings have a strong Samoan community, both those living here permanently and the RSE workers who arrive each season to harvest the fruit crops so important to the district’s economy. The Council celebration included an ava ceremony, student performances, and the raising of the Samoan flag.
