Beautiful apple

August 2022

We have a new sculpture in Flaxmere Park, an ‘apple’ by Hawke’s Bay artists Ricks Terstappen and Sharleen Gamble; and it’s staying courtesy of a donation by Kevin Bayley (Bayley Produce). It’s appropriate, given how

important the apple industry is to our region (we’re New Zealand’s biggest apple-growing region), and our people, providing so many of our whānau with jobs.

The Flaxmere apple, named Organic, is made from steel, with the artists saying it symbolises the traditional kete “interwoven with the universal circular symbol of unity and inclusivity”.

It is one of 20 apples sited in public spaces across Hastings that have been decorated by local artists, in a collaboration between Arts Inc Heretaunga and Studio Benega, with funding from Hastings District Council.

While Flaxmere is keeping its apple, the other 19 will be auctioned off at the end of October, at the end of ‘The Big Apple Project’.
